Chapter Eleven: Question One
What are the legal considerations of what a teacher must be aware when implementing technologies in the classroom? Explain each consideration and the steps you would take in your own classroom to ensure that you do not violate the law.
There are a number of legal considerations that a teacher must consider when implementing technologies into their classroom or their school. For example, teachers have to think about the idea of copyright infringements as they relate to the state or federal copyright laws. Teachers are usually in a good place in regards to copyright laws, due to the acceptable educational use policy that copyright laws give educators. However, to be absolutely sure that they are not breaking the law, teachers should be sure to teach their students about copyright laws. All work should be cited by both the teacher and the students. Teachers also have to make that students are using technology in a safe and proper way. Filters should be on student devices at all times to ensure that they are not getting to anything inappropriate. Along with the proper filters, students should be given a copy of the school’s acceptable use policy. This should be explained by the teacher, so that students do not get into any sort of legal trouble. Along with the copy of the acceptable use policy, teachers should explain to students point by point what is expected of them when it comes to the use of technology in the school. I think that these two things are probably the most common considerations in terms of legality. Teachers have to make sure that credit is given when due and teachers have to make sure that their students are using the internet in a safe and proper manner.
Chapter Twelve: Question Two
Technology continues to evolve, becoming more personally responsive, more collaborative, and more individualized in addressing the needs of the learner. This approach of teaching and learning - whether using personal learning environments, MOOCs, or digital badges - will change how teachers use technology to ensure instruction that addresses the unique needs of the learner. How do you think the personalized learning will alter the way you implement technology-centered personalized learning in your classroom? Give at least three examples.
I think that every student learns in their own unique way. Personalized learning can provide students with their own way of understanding certain material. I think that implementing these technologies can advance the way students learn. As a teacher, I will be implementing some of these technologies this year. For example, I will be teaching different languages in regards to computer programming. I can tell the students all about the languages and how they function different, but until they actually get on the computer and use the languages, they won’t know how to truly use the languages. In my subject area, each language that the students will be learning will be different. There are a few based on block language and a few based on textual language. Until these students actually get their hands on personalized experiences with the programming languages, I don’t think that they can truly understand what the languages are. Another example is my history class. For their state test, I will be giving them personalized websites, where they can work through activities that work on their strengths and weaknesses. I believe that having this personalized work will help my students do well on their state test. For my English class, I plan on having personalized sites for each novel that we will be reading. The site, which may also be in the form of a video or an Edupuzzle, will include chapter summaries, character analyses, literary devices, motifs, symbols, etc. I really think that doing this will help my students get a feel for the novel at hand.
