After completing your course site, based on your working experience and understanding on Chapter 9, reflect on the one of the following questions and link your course site at the end of the reflection:
2. The internet is a public communication area that many believe is
protected by the First Amendment. Others believe that its
contents should be moderated and the public protected from
inappropriate content. What is your view on this controversial
issue, particularly in light of the extensive use of the internet in
schools?
I think that the internet provides a public communication area, but I don’t believe that people should consider it to be protected fully by the First Amendment. I think that people consider the internet to be a place that they can voice any opinion they want, because it seems so simple to just type out words and hide behind a keyboard. I think that the First Amendment argument that many people use while typing on the internet can lead to breaches in civility. If people think that they can say whatever they want to on the internet, it can lead to providing people with misinformation, cyberbullying or cyberstalking, and much more. I think that too often, teenagers especially, believe that they can say whatever they want to on the internet, just because they are not saying it in person. The thing that they really need to understand is that when you post something on the internet, it is out there forever. Even if you delete it, you have to worry about pictures or screenshots of your conversations, which can lead to future career issues or even legal issues. I don’t believe that you can say whatever you want to on the internet, period. The internet is not a public forum to say whatever is on your mind. We have to teach our kids that if you wouldn’t say or do something in person, you shouldn’t do it over the internet either. Many people would argue against this, saying that the First Amendment protects these conversations. I say that we should teach our kids that there are consequences for the things that they do or say, even if it’s over the internet.
